Lead pipes and drinking water
Blue plastic pipe joins a short lead tail just inside the front wall. What remaining lead is that tail, and what sample at the tap was not taken?
That tail is remaining lead in the supply, just inside the front wall, and no sample at the tap was taken. Blue plastic meets a short lead length, so the renewal stopped at that joint rather than removing all the metal. Short does not mean none. The survey has seen the joint. It has not tested the drinking water, has not measured how the lead affects the tap, and has not said the supply is clear. The Drinking Water Inspectorate deals with lead in drinking water. This visit did not.

What is the fuller explanation?
Blue plastic is a common replacement for an incoming pipe, and it is often joined to whatever was left inside the house. A short lead tail is still a lead pipe on the drinking side of the stopcock area. Water that sits in or passes that tail can still meet lead. The survey can describe the joint and the colour of the plastic. It cannot see dissolved metal, and it did not take a sample at the tap. The length being short is a description, not a clearance.
Ask for a water sample at the tap if you need to know about lead in what you would drink, and tell the solicitor the tail is remaining lead. Do not let the word short be written up as removed. The home survey has not commissioned a laboratory result and has not replaced the tail. A plumber can quote to remove it. That quote is not a finding that the water already passed a test.
What should you ask your surveyor?
- Where does the blue plastic meet the lead tail?
- Was any sample taken at the tap, or was the joint only seen?
- Is the tail recorded as remaining lead rather than as a finished removal?
What are the typical next steps?
- Treat the short tail as remaining lead.
- Do not read the blue plastic as removal of that tail.
- Ask for a tap sample if you need a drinking-water result.
Costs vary with the building and with who you instruct. Where this page does not cite a published figure, ask the surveyor, a relevant specialist, or your solicitor for a written quote. Do not treat a forum average as the price.

If the tail is only a few inches, can it be ignored?
No. The survey calls it remaining lead because it is still there, whatever the length. No sample was taken at the tap. The Drinking Water Inspectorate's subject is lead in drinking water, not whether the leftover piece looks small. Short is not the same as absent. The joint was seen and not tested.
Does new blue pipe outside the house clear the inside tail?
No. The outside renewal is the plastic. The tail just inside the front wall is the lead that remains. The survey saw that joint and took no sample at the tap. External plastic does not retire the internal piece. A drinking-water result would be a sample, which this visit did not take.
