Drainage and septic tanks
The channel drain across the drive is blocked. Does that mean the foul drain has collapsed?
No. A channel drain, the sort people often call an ACO drain, takes surface water off the drive, and a blockage there is silt, leaves or a jammed outlet until someone shows otherwise. The survey saw the channel, but it did not camera the underground pipe and it did not prove a foul-sewer collapse.

What is the fuller explanation?
These channels sit in a slot across a sloping drive, with a grate and a small outlet. When they block, water runs towards the garage or the front door instead of into the outlet. That can matter to damp at a threshold. It is still surface water. The surveyor can see a buried grate, standing water, or an outlet they cannot find. They do not water-test the drive, and a standard inspection is not a jetting visit. Approved Document H does not grade this grate. Do not invent a camera score. Nobody put a camera through it on the home survey unless you agreed that extra, and the report would say so.
Clearing a grate is not the same job as repairing a foul drain under the house. Ask a drainage firm to say whether the outlet is merely silted. If they later camera a pipe, read their words. Do not translate them into RICS condition ratings. Keep the porch and the driveway stain attached to this channel if that is what the survey described. A separate foul chamber, if it is full of sewage, is a different paragraph. Do not let one blocked grate become “the drains have collapsed” in a message to the seller.
What should you ask your surveyor?
- Where is the channel, and what was blocking it?
- Did water from it reach the house, or only sit on the drive?
- Did you camera anything? The answer should stay no unless an extra was agreed.
What are the typical next steps?
- Do not call it a foul collapse.
- Lift nothing you cannot put back safely. A viewing is not a jetting job.
- If water reaches the door, ask a drainage firm about this channel first.
Costs vary with the building and with who you instruct. Where this page does not cite a published figure, ask the surveyor, a relevant specialist, or your solicitor for a written quote. Do not treat a forum average as the price.
Also asked about this
Is a channel drain a septic tank outlet?
No. It is surface water across a drive. Foul systems are separate unless a misconnection was actually seen.
Does a clear grate prove the underground outlet is clear?
No. The grate is the part you can see. The pipe beyond it was not filmed.
