Survey costs

The quote separates a drain-camera visit from the survey fee. Why is that camera not already included just because the report might recommend it?

The camera is not already included because a home survey does not film the drains. The quote has separated that visit from the survey fee so you can see it is a further investigation. A report might later recommend a camera. A recommendation is not the same thing as having bought the visit, and it is not the same thing as having done it. MoneyHelper distinguishes a mortgage valuation from a structural survey. Neither of those, and not this survey fee, is a drain camera.

What is the fuller explanation?

Drains are looked at, where the level allows, by eye at chambers that can be lifted. That is not a camera passed along the pipe. Firms who offer both will split the price because the camera is a different person, a different day or a different piece of equipment. Hiding it inside the survey fee would blur a limit the report needs to keep. If the survey later says the drains should be traced, you are still at the start of that instruction, not the end.

Decide after you have read why a camera was recommended, if it is, and then instruct it as its own job. Ask your solicitor to keep the drainage question tied to that later result, not to the quote. Do not tell a lender a camera has been done because the survey fee looked large enough to include one. It has not been done. The separated disbursement is the clue that it was never inside the original inspection.

What should you ask your surveyor?

  • Is the drain camera a separate instruction from the home survey?
  • Will the survey itself film the pipes, or only look where chambers can be seen?
  • If you recommend a camera, has that visit already been paid for in the survey fee?

What are the typical next steps?

  1. Treat the camera quote as a separate visit, not as part of the survey.
  2. Do not assume a recommendation means the filming has been done.
  3. Instruct the camera only if, after the report, you still need it.

Costs vary with the building and with who you instruct. Where this page does not cite a published figure, ask the surveyor, a relevant specialist, or your solicitor for a written quote. Do not treat a forum average as the price.

If the survey fee is the larger number, is the camera inside it?

No. Size of the survey fee does not swallow the separated camera visit. The quote split them so the camera would not be mistaken for part of the inspection. It still has not been carried out. The quote split the camera off so it would not be assumed.

Does a lifted manhole count as the camera?

No. Looking in a chamber is not a camera survey of the pipe. The report may describe what was visible in the chamber. The filming, if you want it, remains the separate disbursement. A look in a chamber is not a camera run along the pipe.
