Subsidence, settlement and heave
Stainless studs are fixed each side of a crack in the gable and no log of distances is in the pack. What has the hardware not recorded?
The hardware has not recorded how wide the crack was, or whether it changed. Stainless studs are fixed each side of a crack in the gable, and no log of distances is in the pack. Studs are the points a measuring device would use. Without the distances, there is no series and no trend. The survey has seen the studs on the gable. It has not reconstructed readings that nobody wrote down.

What is the fuller explanation?
A logbook is the whole point of leaving studs in masonry. Each visit should note the distance between the pair and the date. A bare pair on a gable tells you only that the crack was chosen for watching. It might have been watched, or the job might have stopped at the drill. The survey cannot tell those apart. This is not a measurement the home survey took, and it is not a certificate that the gable is stable.
Ask the solicitor to request any distance log, engineer spreadsheet or insurer note for these gable studs. If the pack stays empty, say the gable crack is unlogged. Do not tell a buyer, a lender or an insurer that movement was measured. If you want readings from this week onward, that is a new instruction to monitor, not a history hiding in the metal.
What should you ask your surveyor?
- Are the studs on the gable crack, with no distance log in the pack?
- Has the hardware been left as not a record of width or change?
- Did the survey avoid inventing readings for those studs?
What are the typical next steps?
- Treat the gable studs as unmarked by any distance log.
- Ask the solicitor for any log the seller might hold.
- Do not describe the gable crack as measured.
Costs vary with the building and with who you instruct. Where this page does not cite a published figure, ask the surveyor, a relevant specialist, or your solicitor for a written quote. Do not treat a forum average as the price.

If the studs are stainless, is the record more reliable?
Stainless describes the metal. It does not create a log of distances. The pack has none. The survey has not recorded movement from the studs, and a corrosion-resistant fixing is not a measurement. Metal type is irrelevant to the missing log.
Does one fresh scratch between the studs count as a log?
No. A scratch is not a series of distances with dates. The hardware has still not recorded whether the gable crack opened or closed. The survey will not promote a mark on the wall into a monitoring history. Dates and distances are what a log is.
