Electrics and gas
One carrier in the consumer unit still uses fuse wire. Does that carrier, on its own, force condition rating 3 on every circuit?
No. One carrier that still uses fuse wire does not, on its own, force condition rating 3 on every circuit. The survey can record that this carrier is a rewireable fuse. Condition rating 3 means that element is serious and/or urgent. It is not a label stuck automatically on circuits the surveyor did not describe that way, and it is not a price or an order to withdraw. The survey has not tested the wiring and it is not an electrical installation condition report. Ask an electrician what that carrier feeds.

What is the fuller explanation?
A consumer unit can hold a mixture of devices. One carrier with fuse wire protects one circuit, or sometimes a small group, depending on how it is wired. The others may be cartridges or breakers. Seeing wire in a single carrier does not describe the sockets, the lights or the cooker. It also does not write condition rating 3 across the whole installation. Any rating belongs to the element the surveyor marked, not to every cable that happens to share the same cupboard.
Ask the surveyor which circuit that carrier appeared to serve, if the labels made it clear, and ask an electrician to confirm it. Do not pull the carrier out on a viewing, and do not replace fuse wire with a thicker strand. If the report has not given every circuit rating 3, do not add that rating because one fuse looks old. Keep the finding attached to the carrier that was described, and let a proper electrical inspection deal with the rest.
What should you ask your surveyor?
- Which carrier still held fuse wire, and could you tell what it fed?
- Were the neighbouring devices breakers, cartridges, or hidden behind the cover?
- Did you apply condition rating 3 to that carrier only, or more widely?
What are the typical next steps?
- Do not spread condition rating 3 from one fuse-wire carrier onto every circuit.
- Ask an electrician what that carrier feeds and what should replace it.
- Leave the fuse carrier alone on any further viewing.
Costs vary with the building and with who you instruct. Where this page does not cite a published figure, ask the surveyor, a relevant specialist, or your solicitor for a written quote. Do not treat a forum average as the price.

Is fuse wire in one carrier the same as a whole-house rewire?
No. It is one old protective device. It does not mean the cables were all renewed, and it does not mean every other circuit is original either.
If that carrier is rating 3, must you withdraw from the purchase?
No. Condition rating 3 means the marked element is serious and/or urgent. It is not an order to withdraw, and it does not price the house or that carrier.
